Enabling Privacy Compliance through Information Classification

With the introduction of new generation privacy and data protection laws, including our GDPR, the need for personal data classification towards compliancy is an absolute must. The requirement to be proactive is not only a feature of the GDPR, it can also be found in other privacy frameworks around the world like CPBR for all APEC countries. Thus, we have our newly introduced information classification policy, privacy classification policy, but how do we put those into practice?

The art of selecting the right software solution

Recently we started a project where the customer asked us to set up and manage a software selection process. The new software would replace the existing, outdated and lacking solution. One of the challenges involved in the assignment was that we needed to be open to both commercial off-the-shelf products and custom-made solutions. Since the solution was part of their business-critical systems, simply browsing the internet and trying a few demos would not suffice.

In this blog post I will explain how we managed the selection process.

What better way to do that than to organize our own API management hackathon!

Translating integration requirements: notification pattern

In this blog post I want to highlight a very simple yet powerful integration pattern: the notification pattern. The reason why it's not often used is because it does not map requirements one-to-one (and let’s be honest, it's also more complex than a simple point-to-point connection).

Guiding your Information Architecture efforts: 4 important aspects

When speaking of Information Architecture, you hear a lot of different opinions. Some think it’s the structure of the information the organisation has, others think it’s the application architecture that is supporting the Information Management efforts, and others see it as the structure of information when presenting it for use.

All of the above is true. Information Architecture is about enabling the use of Information in the organisation as an asset, supporting it’s lifecycle from capture over exploitation to archival.

Apps for Office - Part 2: Accessing SharePoint resources

It's been a while since I published my previous post, and good thing I waited a while. In the original solution architecture for this project I used OAuth to connect the App for Office (see Part 1 of the series) to SharePoint documents. I would have registered a SharePoint app using the appregnew.aspx page and would have retained the Client ID and Client Secret in the App for Office's web.config file. Then, with the use of TokenHelper.cs, available in the SharePoint app template in Visual Studio, I would have gotten the authorization URL to give the app permissions on-the-fly, and on call-back I would have saved the refresh token to an Azure storage account for secure storage. And it actually worked, until I started deploying to the customer's staging environment.

Enterprise architecture becoming ever more important

In an increasingly digital environment Enterprise Architecture is clearly gaining importance. “EA can help organisations to translate their strategy, assess the impact of that strategy and can be a guiding help in making difficult decisions”, explains professor Bjorn Cumps . “Especially for organisations growing in size and complexity, EA can help structure the organisation in order to have a good overview of capabilities, processes, data, systems, technology and how these are all connected.”

Creating your personal Digital Enterprise

I was born before 1985, and so I am what Marx Prensky would call a digital immigrant (according to his 2001 article entitled Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants). The immigrant part means I had to adopt this new technology and make it my own. For the natives it just comes natural, they are 'born to be digital'.

I am part of the last generation that will remember the world without the internet. Since then there has been a dramatic changes in how the world is communicating and collaborating, and the way information impacts our daily lives.

Document Integration for Access Web Apps in SharePoint Online

I never was a fan of the old-school Access (Desktop) databases. They were (and still are) a nightmare to manage because of their decentralized nature and because they gave business users the idea they didn't need IT to deploy critical business applications. In many cases, Access databases became a liability, where no-one knew who wrote it, and no-one could rewrite it or fix bugs inside of it, while it contained a fair bit of business logic and critical business data.

The Digital Enterprise, are organizations ready for it?

Recently, LoQutus conducted a survey on what digital means to businesses and to the people that help grow these businesses. What we've learned is that while the majority of respondents claimed that the organisation they speak for is engaged in one or more digital initiatives, there is a lot of uncertainty on how to tackle digital transformation or on how to effectively build digital solutions integrated with the rest of the organisation. This finding is particularly interesting because this means that most organisations are still in an explorative mode when it comes to defining their end-to-end approach for digitalisation.
